Many avid followers of European football, think that the fans that root for their beloved Manchester United Football team are the most faithful. Others use other words, like fanatical. However, they really do love their team, and have blogs and fan clubs, with members not only in the United Kingdom but all over teh world. Just recently fans have been asked via surveys, etc, what the fate of certain players on the team should be. Player, Nemanja Vidic recently became sidelined for the rest of the season when he suffered an injury to his knee ligament.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . There is great debate among the masses as to who should replace the ailing Vidic. According to a recent survey given directly to the United’s faithful fans, they had a preference. They unanimously stated their preference for Vidic’s replacement should be, Phil Jones. The fans have made their feelings known to United owner, Sir Alex Ferguson. Since the Serbian player Vidic’s return date is now unknown, they want Jones in filling in the loss to try recover for the team’s recent loss. They want Phil Jones to be put back in his prior position of centre back. Time will have to tell what the outcome is.

Being a Premier League fan can be an up and down rollercoaster, depending on the team you support. If you have attended some Premier League games, then you know that some fans are crazier than others. Of course, I am not talking about Fulham fans as they are a rather quiet lot. Instead I think back to 2005 when the West Brom fans practically stormed the pitch. Now those are some crazy fans. And if you have ever seen a Hammers game, then you know that the West Ham fans can get pretty crazy when they break into singing “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” when the notion strikes them. Speaking of singing fans, who doesn’t love it when those crazy Liverpool fans break into song with “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Arsenal fans have had their crazy moments too, like when Emmanuel Adebayor did some celebrating in front of the Arsenal fans as Eastlands a few years ago. With that being said, I think the best and craziest fans in the entire Premier League have got to be Newcastle fans. There is nowhere they won’t travel to see the team play and they will do it shirtless in the freezing cold temperatures.

Seattle and Portland are separated by no more than a three hour drive up or down Interstate 5, depending on which city you reside. This close proximity has resulted in the cities two Major League Soccer teams, the Sounders and Timbers, becoming fierce and hated rivals. Saddled with pageantry and passion, these two teams have brought intensity to each of their respective cities. This has brought soccer into the national spotlight. There are many reasons that this rivalry helps American soccer. The rivalry between Seattle and Portland has brought the casual soccer fan to American Soccer for that specific game, as well as others throughout the league.

Attention in the National Media

In a game that was nationally televised in Seattle between the Seattle Sounders and Real Salt Lake, Portland unveiled a billboard a mile from Seattle’s field that read,” Portland, OR and Soccer City U.S.A. ” This type of national exposure puts soccer on the proverbial map in the American consciousness. A recent study by the University of Michigan indicates that the “elusive” fan needs this plot centered, pro-tagonist, and antagonist scenario to make the sport more exciting.

Sense of Fans Active Role

Message boards and social forums are alive and buzzing year around, displaying a heated rivalry between fans of the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers that extends to the portals of the internet. Sounders fans boast of the success that their teams have had in comparison to the Timbers. The “Timber Army and “Emerald City Supporters” are in full swing as well when their teams host home games against the other. One fan was even assaulted at one of the games in one instance by the opposing group of fans. Finally, teams separate themselves by loyalty at each game, giving the pageant feel of a college type atmosphere

Here are a few of the most popular football stars by television audience but it’s hard to say who’s watching for the celeb or for the sport itself
David Beckham: Yup, he’s still popular and with rumors circulating that he may come back to Europe interest in the soccer star is higher than ever. People tune in weekly just to see what type of hairstyle he’s rocking.
Wayne Rooney: He’s a wealth of quotable sports stories and he has the boyish looks that help hide his aggressive streak. Wayne is fun to watch and he’s got that adorable accent to boot – why would he NOT be popular?
Christiano Ronaldo: There’s no denying he’s a great footballer but it’s hard to know who’s watching for the eye candy and who’s admiring his athletic prowess. Ronaldo knows how to work it on and off the field, both of which have added to his massive international popularity. He also dates supermodels, so

The Seattle Sounder’s entered into the MLS in November 2007 as the latest expansion team in the league. From the beginning it was clear that Seattle fans were special. Maybe fanatical would be a better term to use, rather than special.
Suddenly the streets of the Emerald City were exploding with the fluorescent green of Sounders scarves, jerseys, bumper stickers and hats. Season tickets went on sale and the excitement built up to a fever pitch for the opening match against the New York Red Bulls. On the opening night the players performed brilliantly before a screaming sold out crowd and emerged with a three to zero victory.
Since their opening night fan support has only swelled. Fueled by a strong soccer culture in the Pacific Northwest the Sounders have never failed to sell out a league match. Matches are broadcast in sports bars as religiously as a Seahawks or Mariners game and fans who aren’t parading through the streets on their way to the game pack in to cheer on their home team or crowd around the television at home.
The Sounders have surged onto the MLS scene thanks to an overwhelming level of support from the greatest fans in the league and as long as that support continues, so will the Sounders success.

The Portland Timbers are one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer. This has not stopped the team from having one of the most rabid and supportive fan bases in the league though. The team was started in 2011 along with the expansion team in Vancouver. The Pacific Northwest is quickly becoming a hub for soccer fans in America and Canada with these two teams and the Seattle Sounders who may have the best fan base in the league.Additional information can be found at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soundersfcblog/2015567715_live_sounders_fc_vs_portland_t_1.html?syndicationrss.

The Timbers Army is what the most loyal supporters of the Portland Timbers call themselves. They are widely known for their intense support for the team as they fill the stadium for every Portland Timbers game. The fan base started earlier in 2001 when the Portland soccer team played in the lower divisions of United States Professional Soccer. The fan base continued their support once the Portland team made the jump to Major League Soccer.

The Portland Timbers fans have been featured in Sports Illustrated when they were celebrating a goal against the Seattle Sounders FC. The Seattle Sounders are the Portland Timbers biggest rival and the rivalry between the two teams may be the biggest rivalry in the MLS. The best thing about the Timbers Army is the fact that they engage in many charitable activities around Portland in addition to being a great fan base.

American soccer fans are always trying to think of ways to make soccer more popular in the USA. It seems there is a spike in popularity every 4 years when the World Cup rolls around. The USA made the elimination round in the last World Cup for the first time in years. This helped the popularity of the sport increase for a while. The interest for the sport just does not translate over to the MLS with American soccer fans. I think there is answer and it is fairly simple. We need a Premier League team here in America.

Americans like to see the best version of sports. They like the NBA because it is the best basketball players in the world. Same with the MLB, NFL and NHL. The Premier League is the best soccer league in the world and its teams have the best talent in the world as well. If they brought a Premier League team over to say New York or Boston American soccer fans would travel to see them because every time they played one of the world’s best soccer players would be in town.

It may be too far away for a team but the NBA and NFL have considered having teams in Europe. It would not be that hard to do and may be the spike in popularity that the sport needs in America to have some sort of sustainable growth in the future.

The sport of football, or soccer, has its roots in late eighteenth century England so it stands to reason that the English Premiere League would be the best league in the world. But his has not always been the case. Despite winning the world cup in 1966, English football has always flattered to deceive and the state of the domestic league slumped by the end of the 1980′s.

With the huge injection of media money at the birth of the Premiere League at the start of the 1992/93 season, the rise of the Premiere League has been unstoppable. Massive television coverage and unprecedented marketing turned the games into must see viewing and as the audiences and attendances grew, so did the revenue.

This led to an influx of overseas stars cramming the league full of quality and bankable players. The standard of the play increased, and as the wages of players rose, so did their profile. Football icons and superstars littered every team and worldwide audiences blossomed.

Now even more money flows in as multi-millionaires from around the globe buy up clubs to have a stake in the world’s greatest league, where every week the best players in the world do battle.
