A History Of The Arsenal Football Club.
The Arsenal Football Club of the English Premier League is one of the most storied clubs in the history of English football. The Gunners have won 13 Premier League titles and 10 FA Cups.
The club started in 1886 by workers at Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London. Their nickname, The Gunners, comes from the coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich which depicts three cannons pointing northward.
For most of its history, Arsenal’s home uniforms, called a kit, have been distinctive red shirts with white sleeves. The colors have been worn every year with only minor changes, most recently in 2008 when they went to red shirts with red sleeves with a white stripe.
The Gunners played their home games at Arsenal Stadium, commonly known as Highbury from 1913 to 2006. The stadium held as many as 60,000 until the 1990s when regulations required the stadium be fitted with seats for every fan and the capacity dropped to just under 39,000. Arsenal’s current home is Emirates Stadium, completed in 2006 and seating 60,355.
Arsenal fans are among the most loyal in the league. They call themselves “Gooners” derived The Gunners and sell-out just about every home game. Arsenal supporters are found worldwide as evidenced by the interest in international broadcasts of their games.
Arsenal’s fiercest rivals are their nearest neighbor, Tottenham Hotspur. The matches between these two are called the North London derbies. More recently the Gunners have developed another intense rivalry with Manchester United as the two battled for the Premier League title in the late 1980s.
The 2011-2012 season with mark Arsenal’s 125th anniversary. Celebrations are planned and will include a new patch to be worn on their jerseys recognizing their history dating back to 1886. Arsenal’s current jerseys are emblazoned with the name of their sponsor, Fly Emerites.
